Once the ground rules for an argument have been taught, you can make up your own claim and then get the pupils to make their arguments. This can be used for scientific enquiry and also some scientific knowledge Claim - Smoking cigarettes causes cancer Data - People who regularly smoke cigarettes are more likely to develop ling cancer than those who do not smoke. Warrant - cigarette smoke contains tar which is a known carcinogen Backing – carcinogens are chemicals which can make cells turn cancerous Rebuttal 1 – not everyone who smokes develops lung cancer Rebuttal 2 - some people who have never smoked develop lung cancer
